About the position

The Art Teacher position at Flemington Elementary School and West Taylor Elementary School is responsible for teaching fundamental principles of art to students. The role involves creating a stimulating learning environment, developing lesson plans, and employing various instructional strategies to enhance student achievement. The teacher will also be responsible for maintaining student records, communicating with parents, and adhering to school policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a curriculum required by the State of West Virginia
  • Base instruction on adopted curricula for the school
  • Demonstrate accurate and current knowledge in subject field
  • Develop appropriate lessons to teach instructional objectives
  • Employ a variety of instructional strategies to augment achievement
  • Utilize content scope and sequence in planning
  • Provide an atmosphere conducive to learning consistent with school/county mission
  • Follow established school discipline procedures
  • Establish procedures and rules that enhance learning
  • Encourage students' attendance
  • Set high positive expectations for student performance
  • Encourage and acknowledge individual student's accomplishments and appropriate behavior
  • Treat students in a fair and equitable manner
  • Accommodate individual learning differences
  • Create and maintain an environment that supports learning
  • Communicate with parents
  • Organize teaching strategies to maximize the use of allocated instructional time
  • Prepare and implement lesson plans
  • Begin lesson or instructional activity with a review of previous material
  • Have materials, supplies and equipment ready at the start of the lesson
  • Introduce the instructional activity and specify instructional objectives
  • Direct and adequately supervise students to be on task quickly
  • Present reading, writing, speaking and listening strategies
  • Provide relevant examples and demonstrations to illustrate concepts and skills
  • Assign developmentally appropriate tasks
  • Provide instructional pacing that ensures student understanding
  • Maximize student time-on-task
  • Make effective transitions between instructional activities
  • Summarize the main point(s) of the instructional activity

  • Utilize standard grammar, listening skills, and clarity in communication
  • Follow confidentiality procedures regarding students and staff
  • Demonstrate behavior reflecting established professional responsibilities
  • Adhere to established laws, policies, rules and regulations
  • Interact appropriately with students, educational personnel and parents
  • Participate in activities fostering professional growth
  • Be punctual with reports, grades, and records

Requirements

  • Valid WV Certificate in the area for which applying
  • Strong background in art instruction
  • Enthusiasm and excitement for art to instill a desire to learn
  • Strong academic background
  • Ability to create a stimulating and motivating environment for children
  • Practical knowledge and understanding of middle school developmental needs
  • Proficiency in planning lessons designed to meet student needs
  • Understanding of principles needed to obtain positive classroom student behavior
  • Skills in writing and speaking
  • Knowledge and/or experience relevant to the position
  • Knowledge of different modalities of learning
  • Experience in working with computers
  • Ability to select teaching strategies that complement individual students' learning styles
  • Skills and/or experience in maintaining a cooperative working relationship with staff, students, and public
  • Knowledge and ability to implement routine classroom management techniques
  • Any combination of training and experience leading to successful employment as a middle school art teacher
