About the position

The Art Teacher will be responsible for teaching visual art principles and skills to students from Grade K-1 through Grade 8. This role involves developing engaging art curriculum, directing students in age-appropriate projects, and collaborating with other educators to enhance the learning experience. The teacher will also promote the value of art in students' lives and maintain effective classroom management.

Responsibilities

• Teach art as a special subject to students in Grade K-1 (4 year olds) through Grade 8.
• Create and plan engaging, grade-appropriate art lessons.
• Demonstrate familiarity with national and state art standards.
• Teach children how to use art materials creatively and appropriately.
• Illustrate basic art concepts for students through models such as posters, prints, models and technology.
• Expose students to information about noted artists.
• Design creative activities to allow students to experience and recognize different styles of art.
• Encourage students to develop a personal preference and style.
• Plan and facilitate developmentally-appropriate exhibit/sharing opportunities.
• Maintain strong classroom management through student engagement.
• Communicate with classroom teachers, parents and administrators as needed.
• Work with other specialists (Music and PE) and classroom teachers to develop rich standards-based interdisciplinary experiences.

Requirements

• Masters Degree preferred
• Certified in Visual Art by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
• Proven ability to communicate well with adults and children
• Experience developing music programs for urban students of Hispanic backgrounds preferred.
