About the position

The Art Teacher position is designed to foster students' artistic expression and creativity in the visual arts while enhancing their aesthetic understanding and appreciation. The role involves implementing a district-approved curriculum, developing lesson plans, and providing a safe and optimal learning environment. The teacher will assess student progress and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and administer school art curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into effective learning experiences.
  • Teach knowledge and skills in various art forms including crafts, drawing, painting, and art history to secondary pupils.
  • Provide instruction that helps pupils develop aesthetic concepts and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student skills and modify instructional methods to fit individual needs, including those with special needs.
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting using instructional aids.
  • Organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
  • Instruct pupils in the proper care and use of tools and equipment used in art classes.
  • Evaluate each pupil's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understanding, preparing progress reports.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions to showcase pupils' work.
  • Continue professional development by attending seminars and workshops.
  • Maintain accurate records for grading and reporting student activities and attendance.
  • Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with other school staff and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate art materials and maintain inventory records.

Requirements

  • Connecticut State Certification as an Art Teacher or as required for the position.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Knowledge of current art instructional teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in teaching art at the secondary level.
  • Familiarity with art curriculum and concepts.
  • Experience with special needs education.
