About the position

The Department of Health Services (DHS) Wisconsin Resource Center (WRC) is seeking an Art Teacher to provide art instruction to residents with severe mental health conditions. This role involves teaching various art forms, including art history, painting, drawing, and art therapy. The Art Teacher will also be responsible for instructing residents in basic academic skills and preparing them for GED testing. In addition to art instruction, the teacher will manage and coordinate educational programs, conduct art therapy groups, and lead self-improvement classes. The position requires counseling and guiding residents, developing professional skills, and maintaining security in the school area and classrooms. The Art Teacher will work Monday through Friday from 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, contributing to a supportive and therapeutic environment for individuals in a secure treatment facility recognized for its commitment to high-quality resident care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide art instruction to residents, including art history, painting, and drawing.
  • Conduct art therapy sessions and self-improvement classes.
  • Instruct residents in basic academic skills and prepare them for GED testing.
  • Manage and coordinate educational programs within the facility.
  • Counsel and guide residents in their artistic and personal development.
  • Maintain security in the school area and classrooms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher with at least 15 semester credits in a single academic area and 3 credits of Reading Instruction or Teaching Methods.
  • Wisconsin DPI license in Special Education, Elementary Education, or Secondary Education in a core academic area.
  • Experience in cooperative teaching programs with other departments or units.
  • Training or experience using classroom management techniques for students with special needs or mental illness.
  • Experience writing or working with Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Art Education from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in therapeutic services, clinical services, or social services.
