About the position

The Art Teacher position at Bridgeport Public Schools is designed for the 2023-2024 school year at Columbus School. The role focuses on creating an environment that fosters artistic and intellectual growth among students. The teacher will be responsible for establishing instructional goals and objectives that align with district and school policies, while also considering the unique needs and progress of each student. This includes designing lessons that encourage problem-solving, creativity, and communication skills, all in the context of real-world applications. In addition to lesson planning, the Art Teacher will maintain standards for student behavior that promote self-discipline and positive relationships. The role requires a commitment to ongoing professional development in both content knowledge and teaching methods. The teacher will also be responsible for developing, administering, and evaluating assessments that balance content knowledge with problem-solving skills, and will monitor student progress in relation to established curriculum policies. Engagement with parents and the community is a key aspect of this position, as the teacher will encourage involvement in the educational process and involve parents in assessing their children's progress. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the overall educational mission of the school.

Responsibilities

  • Provides an atmosphere where students have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for artistic and intellectual growth
  • Establishes and adjusts instructional goals and objectives to reflect district/school goals and the needs of students
  • Designs lessons that promote problem-solving, creativity, and communication skills
  • Establishes and maintains standards for behavior that foster student self-discipline and positive relationships
  • Commits to ongoing professional development in content area and pedagogy
  • Plans learning activities to address individual differences among students
  • Develops, administers, and evaluates quality formative and summative assessments
  • Monitors and evaluates students' progress in relation to curriculum policies and goals
  • Encourages and maintains the involvement of parents and community members in support of instruction
  • Involves parents in the assessment of their children's progress and needs
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Required certification: Art, Grades PK-12 (042)
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Three years' successful teaching experience in an urban setting preferred
  • Experience in the use of educational technology
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
