The art teacher is an educational leader who guides the interests and directs the activities of students to facilitate their individual development. This role is crucial in implementing the appropriate curriculum/program and providing instruction and guidance tailored to the individual needs and abilities of students. The art teacher is responsible to the principal of the school and, in some cases, to a supervisor of instruction for the execution of the district's curriculum/program. As a representative of the school and the district, the teacher collaborates with other staff members to enhance the quality of educational experiences for students. Recognizing the importance of cooperation between the school and home, the art teacher maintains open communication with parents to foster a supportive learning environment. Essential job functions include creating a classroom environment conducive to learning, planning daily and long-term learning activities consistent with the district's curriculum, and conducting learning activities aimed at achieving curriculum goals. The art teacher establishes clear objectives for all lessons, employs various instructional methods and materials, and regularly assesses student accomplishments, providing progress reports as required. Additionally, the teacher assists administration in implementing policies governing student conduct and develops reasonable rules for classroom behavior. The art teacher is also responsible for the proper care of all school property, strives to maintain and improve professional competence, and participates in staff meetings and committees. Establishing and maintaining cooperative relations with others is essential, as is scheduling time effectively to manage lesson planning, student and parent conferences, and professional growth. The teacher interprets the art curriculum to classroom teachers, uses technology as a teaching tool, and arranges for conferences to resolve curriculum-related issues. Responsibilities also include managing the ordering, receiving, storing, and inventory of supplies necessary for the art program, preparing the art budget, and assisting with displays of student achievement and other school-related activities. The art teacher participates in in-service workshops, curriculum planning, and public relations efforts to keep the school and community informed about the art program and art education in general. Finally, the teacher prepares an annual budget request reflecting the materials needed for the program and performs other duties as assigned by the principal or supervisor.
