About the position

The Art Teacher position at Reading School District aims to foster creativity and artistic expression among middle school students. The role involves teaching various art forms, developing students' aesthetic understanding, and adapting instruction to meet diverse learning needs. The teacher will also be responsible for maintaining a productive studio environment and engaging with the community through art displays and exhibitions.

Responsibilities

  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art to secondary students.
  • Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations.
  • Provide instruction to develop aesthetic concepts and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling using instructional aids.
  • Develop instructional plans and organize class time for a balanced program of instruction and working time.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to students' varying abilities.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for a productive studio environment.
  • Instruct students in the proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Organize storage areas and control the use of materials and tools to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Evaluate each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understanding, preparing progress reports.
  • Select and requisition instructional materials and maintain inventory records.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions to showcase students' work.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Maintain an auditable record of student attendance and report absences.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
  • Participate in curriculum and developmental programs within the school or district.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Pennsylvania Instructional Teaching Certificate.
  • Ability to speak clearly and write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to apply basic arithmetic calculations and interpret data.
  • Good knowledge of procedures, practices, materials, and equipment for learning experiences.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, parents, and the community.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in teaching art at the middle school level.
  • Ability to coordinate activities with related and specialist staff.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining required records and reports.
