About the position

The AI Project Leader at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is responsible for leading teams in developing innovative AI and data science solutions for national security and healthcare challenges. This role involves guiding engineers and software developers in prototyping and operationalizing state-of-the-art AI technologies, while also mentoring team members and fostering partnerships across various divisions and the wider research community.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead strong teams of scientists and engineers to develop AI and data science solutions.
• Lead the development of new research proposals for high-risk, high-reward ideas.
• Mentor and grow team members into future leaders.
• Build partnerships with scientists and engineers across APL and the wider research community.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• At least 3 years of project leadership experience in DoD, Cyber, or National Health-based AI, Machine Learning or Data Science settings.
• Project management experience from concept development through execution and close out of large-scale R&D initiatives.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong analytical and organizational skills.
• Ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
• Willingness to travel to customer sites as needed.

Nice-to-haves

• Master's degree or higher in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related technical field, with emphasis on data science or applied math.
• At least 8 years of software development and engineering experience.
• Prior experience with large government research and development programs across multiple military and civilian government agencies.
• Current Top Secret security clearance.
