About the position

The Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer at MITRE's Center for Government Effectiveness and Modernization (CGEM) will play a crucial role in enhancing the effectiveness of U.S. government agencies such as the IRS and Tax Administration Division. This position focuses on applying artificial intelligence and automation to improve customer experiences, detect and anticipate tax non-compliance, and develop data and analytics strategies. The role requires a blend of technical expertise, project leadership, and the ability to work independently on data-intensive projects.

Responsibilities

  • Apply AI concepts to solve tax administration problems.
  • Select and develop appropriate AI-based methods and techniques for the problem at hand.
  • Develop actionable insights based on analysis across multiple structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Stay knowledgeable of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes related to artificial intelligence.
  • Perform across a broad range of assignments.
  • Work independently with minimal instructions, guidance, and direction.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Academic background in mathematics, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related technical field.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and critical thinking ability.
  • Experience in designing and implementing data-intensive AI solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, linking technical results to the business domain.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with programming languages such as Python, Java, or similar.
  • Proficiency with machine learning and/or deep learning frameworks.
  • Experience with natural language processing (NLP) and/or Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Ability to obtain & maintain a US government security clearance (IRS - Suitability).

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with data engineering and data querying languages such as SQL.
  • Experience with AI model monitoring, test, and evaluation (e.g., drift detection, bias).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the tax administration ecosystem, e.g., compliance processes, taxpayer service, IRS technology and infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with data architecture and data management concepts and strategies, such as the data lifecycle, data stewardship and governance.
  • Experience working with or leading multidisciplinary teams.
