The Human Language Technology (HLT) Department at MITRE collaborates with a wide range of US Government agencies to provide innovative language processing solutions that meet complex mission needs. Our work not only addresses real-world challenges but also allows for research and prototyping of new methods to fulfill these needs. We are seeking highly motivated, adaptive, and self-directed candidates to engage in research, development, engineering, evaluation, and integration of natural language processing capabilities. In this role, you will be responsible for researching, developing, evaluating, and integrating HLT capabilities. You will work in cross-functional teams, providing technical leadership to develop and implement AI and HLT solutions, particularly those leveraging large language model technology. Your responsibilities will include analyzing language processing needs, prototyping HLT systems, evaluating technology solutions, and conveying complex ideas to non-technical audiences. You will also lead projects or small teams to tackle complex HLT problems for our sponsors.

Responsibilities

  • Work in and provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams to develop and implement AI and HLT solutions, including capabilities that leverage large language model technology
  • Analyze language processing needs and recommend innovative solutions
  • Prototype HLT systems or components based on analysis of workflow and operational mission needs
  • Evaluate technology solutions in the context of mission data and workflow needs, and provide actionable recommendations
  • Convey complex ideas to non-technical audiences through briefings and/or white papers
  • Lead projects or small teams to solve complex HLT problems for our sponsors

Requirements

  • Requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, linguistics, or related disciplines; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience
  • 8+ years of impactful work experience in AI/HLT-related fields
  • Demonstrated recent experience with large language models
  • Demonstrated experience in prototyping/developing human language technology components/systems
  • Ability to apply state-of-the-art machine learning techniques to human language technology processing challenges
  • Experience with programming languages such as Java or Python
  • Ability to work independently to learn new technologies, methods, processes, frameworks/platforms, and systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate challenging technical concepts to both lay and expert audiences
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, linguistics, or related disciplines
  • Track-record of successful deployment of HLT systems or components that have been used by customers or stakeholders outside of a lab/experimental setting
  • Active DOD security clearance
