About the position

The Product Realization and Reliability Office (PRRO) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to supporting plutonium programs, including pit production, surveillance, research and development, and subcritical experiments. The primary focus of the Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) for Production role is to lead the application of advanced AI/ML techniques to enhance and standardize existing processes, procedures, and operations within the Pit Technologies Division. As the technical lead, you will integrate various manufacturing, characterization, and testing processes relevant to pit surveillance and manufacturing, collaborating with other Design and Production agencies across the nuclear security enterprise and engaging with subject matter experts in material science, chemistry, and nondestructive evaluation. In this role, you will oversee and actively participate in research, development, and application activities aimed at developing AI techniques for a range of projects associated with plutonium production and surveillance. Your responsibilities will include leading R&D projects focused on AI-enabled manufacturing process control, self-driving laboratory experiments, predictive analytics for user facilities, surrogate modeling, and uncertainty quantification. You will also be tasked with creating factory-level digital twins to facilitate "what if" analyses and developing vision systems to assist in the non-destructive evaluation of products in process. Additionally, you will steer research activities to ensure their success and build teams to pursue applied R&D efforts, aligning AI/ML production initiatives with complementary AI/ML and Digital Engineering efforts within the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
