About the position

The Artist-In-Residence (Research Fellow) at Slavery North, University of Massachusetts Amherst, is a unique role designed for artists and scholars to engage in independent research and creative production focused on the histories of Transatlantic Slavery in Canada and the US North. This position emphasizes the importance of anti-colonial and anti-racist methodologies, encouraging participants to contribute to the scholarly and social environment of the center while producing original works in various artistic fields.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research and create original works in one or more of the five mandate areas of Slavery North.
  • Actively participate in the life of Slavery North, including working in shared office space and attending relevant activities.
  • Contribute to a culture of conversation, support, and sharing of ideas and resources.
  • Mentor and support UMass Amherst students.
  • Present at least one public lecture and participate in exhibitions, workshops, and/or podcasts related to the research project.
  • Provide biographical and research information for promotional materials.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated evidence of consistent creative output of a high standard.
  • Strong record of exhibitions and/or public engagement.
  • Participation in professional, academic, creative, or community organizations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in cinema and film making, ceramics, mixed media, painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, and fiction writing.
