About the position

The position involves assisting with urban forest management activities, including inventory updates, marking trees for removal, coordinating with homeowners, and performing site inspections. The role also includes outreach related to the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), tree planting, and urban forest management. The candidate will work closely with contractors from the City of Sioux Falls who are responsible for removing street trees, monitoring their progress, and inspecting their work for quality assurance. Additionally, the position requires assisting with the City of Sioux Falls planting permit program by performing initial site inspections and re-inspecting planted sites. The candidate will also review the city's forestry website to identify opportunities for improved communication efficiencies and avenues.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with urban forest management activities, such as inventory updates, marking trees for removal, coordinating with homeowners, and performing site inspections.
  • Assist with outreach pertaining to Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), tree planting, and urban forest management.
  • Work closely with City of Sioux Falls contractors removing street trees to monitor progress and inspect work for quality assurance.
  • Assist with the City of Sioux Falls planting permit program performing initial site inspections and re-inspecting planted sites.
  • Review the city's forestry website to provide opportunities for increased communication efficiencies and avenues.

Requirements

  • Students enrolled in a forestry, arboriculture, natural resources management, horticulture, landscape design, or closely related curriculum, as a full-time student at a college, university, or vocational technical school.
  • Ability to identify various tree species.
  • Ability to work as a team member and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
