Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design and execution of experimental projects related to alloys and composites.
  • Design, construct, and maintain process equipment and testing systems.
  • Operate process equipment, particularly for melting and casting of reactive metals.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate experimental facilities; manage ordering of components and supplies.
  • Collaborate effectively with research faculty and contribute to all aspects of research projects.
  • Conduct research experiments and document findings, preparing reports as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience performing professional-level work with scientific or engineering research protocols.
  • Strong background in mechanical engineering, including heat transfer and mechanics.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment such as vacuum systems and furnaces.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and laboratory software (e.g., LabVIEW, MatLab).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking, good judgment, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to lift over 50 lbs and maneuver equipment as necessary.

Nice-to-haves

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with high vacuum systems and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of basic metallurgy and metallic alloys.
  • Experience with optical microscopy and metallographic sample preparation.
