Asphalt Laborer- St George, UT

About the position

The General Laborer position at Western Rock Products, a CRH Company, involves a variety of construction duties aimed at assisting highway, utility, and grade crews, as well as working at various on-site plant locations. The role is primarily manual labor, requiring the employee to follow the supervisor's instructions while working independently on less complex tasks. The laborer will be responsible for preparing ground surfaces for road construction, which includes removing debris, operating ground compactors, leveling dirt, and setting up safety measures such as fencing and barricades. Additionally, the laborer will assist in the paving process by walking behind the paver machine to shovel and rake asphalt, ensuring that it is applied correctly and that manhole covers and water valve boxes are accessible. The position also entails cleaning tools and equipment after each workday, assisting with the operation of various machinery if trained, and performing other laborer tasks as needed, such as cutting concrete or asphalt and job site clean-up. The laborer will be expected to maintain tools and equipment in a safe and clean condition and assist with flagging and traffic control as required. This role is essential for ensuring that construction projects proceed smoothly and safely, contributing to the overall success of the team and the company.

Responsibilities

• Prepares ground surfaces for the road building process by removing debris.
• Operates ground compactors, levels out and rakes dirt, sets string markers, and removes items within the area to be paved.
• Sets up fencing, barricades, and/or safety cones to block off the work area as needed.
• Prepares manhole covers, openings, and water lines, and may insert risers as needed.
• Walks behind paver machine to shovel and rake asphalt as it is applied to the ground.
• Levels out asphalt with rake and uses shovel to dig out manhole covers and water valve boxes that are buried by the asphalt.
• Cleans asphalt off tools and equipment after each work day.
• Assists with operating equipment as needed and if trained, including paver, roller, backhoe, water truck, etc.
• Performs other laborer tasks as needed, including cutting concrete or asphalt with saw, sweeping, etc.
• Uses various equipment, hand and power tools.
• Picks up and/or delivers construction materials at job site locations.
• Performs job site clean-up.
• Assists with flagging and traffic control as needed.
• Maintains all tools and equipment in a safe and clean condition.

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
• Previous related experience in the construction field is a plus.
• Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write correspondences and memos.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
• Ability to work well with others in a group or one-on-one setting.
• Knowledge of inventory and order processing systems; uses job-specific computer system for ticketing and two-way radio for communications.
• Must have a current and valid driver's license.
