About the position

As an Asset Protection Manager (APM) at JCPenney, you will lead Asset Protection activities for your assigned unit in accordance with company policies and procedures, with the primary goal of driving sales and profits. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety and security of the store's assets while fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration among team members. You will be responsible for developing your team through regular developmental conversations, hiring, and training new Asset Protection talent. Your leadership will involve actively engaging with associates on the sales floor, coaching them in real-time to enhance their skills and performance. You will also advise Store and District Leadership Teams on any opportunities for improvement that you observe. In addition to team development, you will conduct internal and external investigations to proactively identify potential acts of theft and fraud. This includes observing associate and customer activity, reviewing exception reports, and conducting interviews with associates suspected of theft or fraud, all while adhering to company policies. You will maintain accurate documentation of all investigations and communicate external theft trends to your team. Building relationships with local law enforcement and mall security partners will be essential in your role, as will attending hearings and updating files with court-related outcomes. Your responsibilities will also encompass shrink and safety management. You will tailor the company's Asset Protection direction to your specific store, creating innovative ways to educate and motivate your team to focus on shrinkage reduction and safety. This includes coaching store associates on maintaining a safe work environment and conducting periodic audits to ensure adherence to merchandise protection standards. You will identify opportunities for improvement in merchandise protection and work collaboratively with your team to implement effective solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct developmental conversations with direct reports and maintain notes/observations of strengths and opportunities.
  • Interview, hire, and train Asset Protection talent for the store.
  • Ensure the Asset Protection team follows Asset Protection Directives, policies, and procedures.
  • Actively walk the floor and coach associates to enhance their abilities.
  • Identify potential acts of theft and fraud by observing associate and customer activity.
  • Review exception reports and investigation referrals.
  • Interview associates suspected of theft or fraud and document all stages accordingly.
  • Review and ensure all Asset Protection documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Communicate external theft trends to associates and partner with other locations to identify Organized Retail Crime (ORC) groups.
  • Attend hearings as required and update appropriate files with court-related outcomes.
  • Create and maintain relationships with local law enforcement and mall security partners.
  • Audit departments for merchandise protection standard adherence and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Coach store associates on maintaining a safe work environment and reducing hazards.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in asset protection or loss prevention management.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and motivate a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct investigations and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Knowledge of retail operations and shrinkage reduction strategies.
  • Ability to build relationships with law enforcement and security partners.
