About the position

KING 5, in Seattle is looking for an Assignment Desk Editor who can lead our team to create engaging content that lives up to our “Stand for Truth” brand. As the first television station in the Pacific Northwest with a storied legacy of serving our community, we believe in Fourth Estate accountability reporting. This position is responsible for selecting, developing, and planning daily reporting assignments to be covered by our team of journalists. The job involves fielding calls from the public, staying connected with local news and press releases, and organizing breaking news events for live coverage on TV and online. This role is a non-management, full-time, hourly, and non-union role that reports to the Assistant News Director. The Assignment Desk Editor will discover and produce unique, local, and engaging content while reacting quickly to breaking news and communicating plans to the staff. The role requires monitoring a variety of public safety radio systems and user-generated content for breaking news, assisting with story planning, and providing editorial guidance to execute daily newsroom content. The editor will also utilize multiple social media platforms to identify stories and search for criminal and civil document systems to distribute to news and digital producers. During major breaking news events, the editor will perform basic digital producing and maintain knowledge of specific political, business, and other high-profile individuals in the Northwest. Understanding audience insights and metrics is crucial for effective content planning and execution, and collaboration with other TEGNA stations, NBC affiliates, and foreign partners is essential to publish compelling stories, photos, and videos across web, mobile, and social media platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Discover and produce unique, local, and engaging content
  • React quickly to breaking news and communicate plan to staff
  • Monitor a variety of public safety radio systems and UGC for breaking news
  • Assist with story planning, including identifying big stories and coverage opportunities
  • Provide editorial guidance and manage logistics to execute daily newsroom content
  • Use multiple social media platforms to identify stories
  • Search and locate criminal and civil document systems to be distributed to news and digital producers
  • Perform basic digital producing during a major breaking news event
  • Maintain knowledge on specific political, business, and other high-profile people in the Northwest
  • Understand audience insights and metrics, apply to content planning and execution
  • Collaborate with other TEGNA stations, NBC, affiliates, and Foreign partners (Global TV) to search trending content and publish compelling stories, photos, and video from our corporate network across web, mobile and social media platforms

Requirements

  • 2+ year TV industry or related experience
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts as needed
  • Sound news judgment while meeting daily deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communications
