About the position

CBS Sports is seeking a freelance Assignment Editor to support productions across all sports, with a focus on soccer for the Golazo Network. The role involves staying updated on sporting events, conducting newsgathering, and coordinating content acquisition across various CBS platforms. The Assignment Editor will respond to breaking news, manage logistics for ENG crews, and collaborate with internal teams to ensure timely and effective coverage. This position requires strong editorial judgment, organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, often during nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Conduct newsgathering across multiple CBS platforms.
• React immediately to breaking news and requests.
• Identify and acquire content for use across productions, including news conferences, interviews, and highlights.
• Hire freelance ENG crews.
• Plan editorial and logistical coverage.
• Understand compliance with rights and clearance guidelines.
• Post highlights for CBS affiliates on video distribution site.
• Handle logistics under deadline.
• Schedule and calendar planning for all sporting events.
• Provide story ideas and recommend content for coverage.
• Communicate regularly with producers on content.
• Work with CBS affiliates on developing stories.
• Gather transmission information for televised games.
• Work closely with media asset management to ensure all games and content are recorded.
• Stay informed on sporting events and storylines.
• Communicate with urgency and clarity to producers and on-air talent.
• Support storytelling that is timely, relevant, innovative, and inclusive.

Requirements

• Strong knowledge in sports, with an emphasis on college sports.
• Depth of knowledge in fiber, satellite, cellular, FTP, and viral newsgathering procedures.
• Resourceful ability to conduct research and a passion for discovering and sharing new knowledge.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Strong editorial judgment.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, and flexible hours.
• Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and prioritize assignments.
• Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Strong knowledge in content acquisition.

Nice-to-haves

• Preferred knowledge with Microsoft Office programs: Outlook, Excel, Word.
• Working knowledge of television production and electronic and social media newsgathering.
• Experience with a variety of approaches to Internet searches and electronic newsgathering techniques.
