About the position

The Assignment Editor at CBS Sports is responsible for supporting productions across all sports, with a focus on soccer for the Golazo Network. This role involves newsgathering, content acquisition, and coordination of coverage for various CBS platforms. The Assignment Editor must respond to breaking news, manage logistics, and collaborate with internal teams to ensure timely and effective content delivery. This position requires strong sports knowledge, organizational skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, often during nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Conducting newsgathering across multiple CBS platforms.
• React immediately to breaking news and requests.
• Identify and acquire content for use across productions, including news conferences, interviews, and highlights.
• Hire freelance ENG crews.
• Editorial and logistical planning of coverage.
• Understand compliance with rights and clearance guidelines.
• Post highlights for CBS affiliates on video distribution site.
• Handle logistics under deadline.
• Schedule and calendar planning on all sporting events.
• Provide story ideas and recommend content for use in coverage.
• Communicate regularly with producers on content.
• Work with CBS affiliates and others on developing stories to share information, video, and sound.
• Gather transmission information for televised games.
• Work closely with media asset management to ensure all games and content are recorded.
• Stay informed and up-to-date on sporting events and storylines.
• Work in a fast-paced environment, communicating with urgency and clarity to producers, on-air talent, and production associates.
• Identify news and emerging storylines; gather ideas and content for potential storytelling to enhance coverage.
• Use deep sports knowledge and sound news judgment to support timely and relevant storytelling.
• Proactively identify and suggest solutions to address potential coverage.

Requirements

• Strong knowledge in sports, with specialized emphasis on college sports.
• Possess depth of knowledge in fiber, satellite, cellular, FTP, and viral newsgathering procedures.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Strong editorial judgment.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, and flexible hours.
• Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment under deadlines and prioritize assignments.
• Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Strong knowledge in content acquisition.
• Excellent writing and communication skills, with keen attention to detail.
• Experience with a variety of approaches to Internet searches and fluency in electronic newsgathering techniques.

Nice-to-haves

• Preferred knowledge with Microsoft Office programs: Outlook, Excel, Word.
• Working knowledge of television production and electronic and social media newsgathering.
• History of working collaboratively across departments with peers and colleagues to advance content and coverage.
• Prior experience in sports journalism field is a plus.
• Experience in digital and/or video preferred.
