About the position

The Assignment Editor plays a crucial role in the news operation by managing incoming news calls and assigning daily news stories based on the availability of news personnel. This position requires a proactive approach to tracking stories from various sources, including government agencies, wire services, and community groups. The Assignment Editor is responsible for dispatching photographers, reporters, and other personnel to cover stories, ensuring that all logistics for news personnel are coordinated effectively. In addition to these responsibilities, the Assignment Editor participates in daily story meetings, providing a comprehensive list of potential news stories and collaborating with the News Director to develop plans for all broadcasts. This role also involves assisting in the development, planning, and follow-up of all news stories, which may include editing video clips as assigned and writing stories for the web and other eMedia platforms. The Assignment Editor is expected to interact with viewers and users on social media sites, enhancing the station's engagement with its audience. Other duties may be assigned as needed, making this a dynamic and fast-paced position within the newsroom.

Responsibilities

  • Answer incoming news calls and assign daily news stories according to available news personnel.
  • Track stories from all sources including government agencies, wire services, and community groups.
  • Dispatch photographers, reporters, and other personnel to cover stories.
  • Coordinate logistics for news personnel.
  • Participate in daily story meetings and supply a comprehensive list of possible news stories.
  • Work with the News Director to develop plans for all broadcasts.
  • Assist in the development, planning, and follow-up of all news stories.
  • Edit video clips as assigned.
  • Write stories for the web and other eMedia platforms.
  • Interact with viewers/users on social media sites.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Minimum two years' experience in news operations preferred.
  • Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to work any shift.
