About the position

KOAT, the ABC affiliate in Albuquerque, NM, is seeking an Assignment Editor who is passionate about delivering compelling news coverage and engaging with the community. In this role, you will be at the forefront of breaking news, utilizing your keen sense of what’s happening around you to capture and convey stories that matter to our viewers. Your leadership in the newsroom will be crucial as you oversee news coverage and help shape the narrative of our broadcasts. You will report directly to the Assistant News Director, ensuring that our news team is well-coordinated and effective in delivering timely and relevant content. As an Assignment Editor, you will be responsible for listening to multiple police scanners that cover a wide range of agencies throughout our market. This requires not only excellent auditory skills but also the ability to discern which stories are worth pursuing. You will gather and organize information from various sources, including press releases, emails, phone calls, and viewer tips, to identify compelling content for our newscasts. Your role will also involve assisting news management with content gathering and planning, as well as supporting producers, digital editors, and reporters in their story-gathering efforts. In addition to your editorial responsibilities, you will keep track of crews in the field, ensuring effective communication and coordination. You will also be tasked with furnishing content for all digital platforms, including sending push alerts and managing social media posts. This multifaceted role requires a proactive approach and the ability to remain calm and collected during high-pressure situations, particularly during breaking news events. Your willingness to work various shifts, including weekends and nights, will be essential to meet the demands of this dynamic position.

Responsibilities

  • Listen to multiple police scanners covering various agencies throughout the market.
  • Gather and organize press releases, emails, phone calls, and viewer tips to identify compelling content for newscasts.
  • Assist news management with content gathering and planning.
  • Support producers, digital editors, and reporters with story-gathering efforts.
  • Keep track of crews in the field and maintain communication with them.
  • Furnish content and post it to all digital platforms, including sending push alerts and managing social media posts.

Requirements

  • Experience listening to police scanners.
  • Experience with digital platforms, especially social media, to monitor accounts and gather content.
  • Working knowledge of FTP or willingness to learn how to FTP video to other stations.
  • Familiarity with local newsgathering technology and terminology.
  • Ability to maintain professional working relationships with newsmakers.
  • Capability to gather information from multiple sources simultaneously and quickly disseminate it to anchors, reporters, producers, and digital editors.
  • Ability to remain calm and level-headed during breaking news situations.
  • Willingness to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and nights.
  • Related military experience will be considered.
  • In-person attendance is required.
