About the position

The Assistant Academic Research Scientist position at Emory University focuses on brain pathology and therapeutic efficacy testing of small molecules in epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease models. The role involves experimental design, data collection, and analysis, working collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team of neuroscientists and medicinal chemists. The successful candidate will perform complex tasks to advance basic and translational research programs under minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct experiments related to brain pathology and therapeutic efficacy testing.
  • Analyze and interpret data from biochemical and histology studies.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to acquire data from in vitro and in vivo models.
  • Treat rodents with investigational drug candidates and study behavioral deficits.
  • Harvest blood and brain samples for analysis at the end of experiments.
  • Perform analysis of brain inflammation and neuropathology using ELISA, Western-blot, and qRT-PCR techniques.
  • Review literature and apply advanced knowledge for protocol development.
  • Assist in grant and funding applications as necessary.

Requirements

  • PhD or Master's degree with two years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab, or a Bachelor's degree with four years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.
  • Laboratory experience related to the area of assignment is required.
  • Experience with assays such as ELISA and Western blot is necessary.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ph.D. in molecular neurobiology or neuropharmacology with 0-4 years of postdoctoral or scientific research experience.
  • Experience with transgenic Alzheimer's rodent models.
  • Familiarity with rodent brain/tissue harvesting and surgical procedures.
  • Experience with cognitive and memory assays on mice or rats.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods including probability and power analysis.
