About the position

The J.R. Simplot Company is seeking a highly motivated individual to support the Agronomic Sciences Team at Simplot Plant Sciences. This role involves performing greenhouse, tissue culture lab, seed, and field trial efforts aimed at genetically improving potato and other crops through biotechnology and breeding. The successful candidate will work closely with Research and Development (R&D) to carry out vegetative propagation and seed production protocols, assist in plant maintenance and optimization in the greenhouse, and design, manage, analyze, and report on agronomy research trials. A strong emphasis is placed on teamwork, effective communication, and active participation in discussions and meetings. Candidates with experience in tissue culture are preferred, and a demonstrated competency in agronomy, horticulture, plant pathology, or soil fertility is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with tissue culture and greenhouse plantlet propagations/repository maintenance
  • Assist with greenhouse seed production
  • Assist with routine cleaning and maintenance of seed lab and greenhouse spaces
  • Assist with source purity testing
  • Participate in all facets of project work including logistics, planning, coordination, and inventory management
  • Become proficient with Biotechnology Quality Management Systems (BQMS) and other in-house quality management systems to ensure regulatory compliance and the tracking and containment of regulated material
  • Contribute to writing detailed operating protocols, record, organize, and analyze data, present technical reports and summaries
  • Optimize existing methods and rapidly adapt new methods in the field, greenhouse, and tissue culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from a 4-year college or university in Agronomy, horticulture, biology or related field, or high school diploma/general education degree with 8+ years relevant experience in Agronomy, horticulture, biology, or related field
  • Familiarity with aseptic technique, plant tissue culture, field testing, data analysis and data reporting
  • Ability to troubleshoot, optimize and validate agronomic/greenhouse assays and procedures
  • Ability to use agronomic methodologies/instruments or willingness to be trained in their use
  • Valid Idaho driver's license and willingness to occasionally travel and work off-site
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Basic analytical math skills
