About the position

The Assistant Area Wildlife Manager position at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is responsible for evaluating, designing, leading, implementing, and assessing wildlife management activities in the New London wildlife work area. The role aims to ensure the optimum and sustainable use of wildlife resources while protecting and enhancing wildlife communities for the benefit of the people of Minnesota. This position involves collaboration with various stakeholders, conducting inventories, managing habitats, and providing public education about wildlife management practices.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate resource management activities with various stakeholders to promote wildlife and plant community diversity.
  • Plan and direct physical and biological inventories of wildlife resources to evaluate resource health and management effectiveness.
  • Protect and improve wildlife habitat and native plant communities to meet population and diversity goals.
  • Utilize GIS tools and databases to conduct analyses and document wildlife use and habitat conditions.
  • Educate and communicate with the public regarding wildlife management opportunities, regulations, and goals.
  • Perform general administrative duties and maintain effective resource management operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife or a related field with wildlife emphasis.
  • Experience in wildlife habitat management, including managing various habitats for wildlife.
  • Technical knowledge of wildlife species identification and habitat relationships.
  • Ability to become National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Fire Fighter Type 2 qualified within twelve months of hire.
  • Knowledge of census/survey techniques and limitations.
  • Writing and communication skills to convey complex information effectively.
  • Knowledge of hunting and trapping traditions and regulations.
  • Experience with GIS/GPS tools and software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Wildlife Biology or related field.
  • Certification as Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) or higher.
  • Knowledge of citizen participation and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Field experience with prairie restoration and prescribed burning practices.
  • Experience in coordinating wetland management for wildlife habitat.
  • Experience in writing contracts for wildlife habitat projects.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
