About the position

The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech is seeking applications for a tenured/tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Transportation Infrastructure and System Engineering, effective August 2025. The successful candidate will contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community, focusing on innovative scholarship and research, teaching, and mentoring students, while also serving the university and the profession.

Responsibilities

• Lead innovative scholarship and research in Transportation Infrastructure and System Engineering.
• Develop and sustain an externally-funded research program.
• Teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
• Serve the university and the profession.
• Conduct research on enhancing the resilience and sustainability of infrastructure systems.
• Collaborate with research teams across and outside the university.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field.
• Strong record of academic accomplishments commensurate with rank.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively.
• Commitment to interdisciplinary research and instruction.
• Ability to teach subjects related to the field and develop courses in emerging areas.
• Willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred, with the capacity to obtain PE registration.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in developing, preserving, and renewing intelligent, multi-functional resilient and sustainable transportation infrastructure.
• Knowledge of infrastructure health assessment and transportation asset management.
• Familiarity with emerging data collection and analysis paradigms.
