About the position

The Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communications at Saint Peter's University is a pivotal role within the athletics department, responsible for overseeing media relations, public relations, and communications. This position focuses on the strategic development and execution of content dissemination across various platforms, ensuring alignment with marketing, ticketing, fundraising, and recruiting initiatives. The incumbent will lead the athletics communications department, maintaining brand consistency and enhancing the visibility of the department and its student-athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive multi-media plan to showcase programs, student-athletes, and events.
  • Deliver internal and external messaging and assist with marketing efforts to increase outreach and engagement.
  • Oversee a media relations/athletics communications plan for all sport programs.
  • Provide administrative leadership to full-time staff, graduate assistants, freelance and student staff/interns.
  • Develop robust student athletics communications internship/practicum experiences.
  • Plan work assignments for comprehensive coverage of communications and operations at home events.
  • Serve as the primary media contact for select sports, including men's basketball.
  • Assist in the production of digital marketing collateral and disseminate content across platforms.
  • Write and deliver press releases on tight deadlines.
  • Oversee design and creation of departmental publications.
  • Coordinate the daily maintenance and development of the official athletics website.
  • Write press releases and feature stories promoting the department and its student-athletes.
  • Serve as department spokesperson for all media requests.
  • Oversee historical archives and assure website content is updated.
  • Pitch story ideas for teams and student-athletes.
  • Coordinate and present media relations training for coaches and student-athletes.
  • Establish protocol and best practices to respond to crisis situations.
  • Coordinate with external operations and marketing to increase awareness and revenue for events.
  • Collaborate with marketing on content and promotions calendar.
  • Interact with other University departments to promote athletics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Digital Media or a related field.
  • Previous experience in communications or public relations within a college athletic department or professional sports organization.
  • Extensive proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite software (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere), Microsoft Office, NCAA LiveStats, StatCrew, and SIDEARM websites.
  • Strong background in writing, editing, and design in digital media.
  • Knowledge of effective public relations and communications strategies in intercollegiate athletics.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff, media, and community members.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task under time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability to travel with select teams, including men's basketball.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience managing team or departmental social media accounts.
  • Graphic design/illustration skills.
  • Experience as a public address announcer for sports.
