About the position

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking an Assistant Athletic Director for Student Athlete Services to play a pivotal role in supporting the academic and career development of student-athletes. This position involves providing comprehensive counseling and advising services to student-athletes regarding their major and career planning, ensuring they have access to accurate and timely information about their academic progress. The Assistant Athletic Director will also be responsible for the development and facilitation of training programs for new employees and ongoing training in student-athlete support services and development. This role requires collaboration with various campus committees and the completion of assigned projects, all while establishing and maintaining strong relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and faculty members. In addition to counseling responsibilities, the Assistant Athletic Director will supervise the Student-Athlete Associate/Assistant Directors, attend weekly senior staff meetings, and act as a liaison between the Student Programs and the Athletics Department. The position also includes managing the onboarding process for new employees, ensuring that student-athlete staff are adequately trained, and that all deadlines are met. The Assistant Athletic Director will oversee the Internship Program, organize the Summer Bridge, and facilitate New Student-Athlete Orientation Programs. Furthermore, this role involves providing administrative support to the Associate Athletic Director and working closely with faculty and staff to accommodate student-athletes' exam schedules, particularly during travel for athletic competitions. The Assistant Athletic Director must adhere to all institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations, reporting any known violations in accordance with established policies. This position also requires assisting in the development of class schedules and degree plans for assigned students, with a focus on meeting NCAA academic eligibility requirements. Flexibility in scheduling is essential, as the role may require early morning, late evening, and weekend hours, along with travel with athletic teams as needed. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the overall mission of the Athletics Department.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and serves as liaison of Student-Athlete Associate/Assistant Directors and attends weekly athletic department senior staff meetings.
  • Manages onboarding of new employees and ensures student-athlete staff are properly trained.
  • Provides counseling and advising to student-athletes on major and career planning while maintaining accurate and timely information on academic progress.
  • Oversees Internship Program, organizes the Summer Bridge, and New Student-Athlete Orientation Programs.
  • Serves as liaison between New Student Programs and Athletics Department.
  • Provides administrative support to the Associate Athletic Director with day-to-day counseling responsibilities of athletic teams.
  • Works with faculty and staff to proctor exams for student-athletes at non-standard times or while traveling for athletic competition.
  • Adheres to all institution, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations and reports all known NCAA violations.
  • Assists in the development of class schedules and degree plans for assigned students in conjunction with the athletic academic counselor.
  • Works flexible schedules, including early morning and late evening hours and weekends.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related field required.
  • Four (4) years of related experience required.
  • Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Benefits

  • Annual Salary: $55,180 - $65,000
