About the position

The Assistant Athletic Trainer at Fairleigh Dickinson University plays a crucial role in supporting student-athletes by ensuring their health and safety during athletic activities. Under the guidance of the Director of Athletics and the Head Athletic Trainer, this position is responsible for the prevention of athletic injuries, as well as the recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of such injuries. The Assistant Athletic Trainer will also be involved in the rehabilitation and reconditioning of injured athletes, ensuring they can return to their sports safely and effectively. This role requires a proactive approach to health care administration, including maintaining accurate records of examinations and the physical condition of student-athletes. In addition to providing coverage at athletic events, the Assistant Athletic Trainer is tasked with the maintenance of equipment and supplies related to the athletic training program. This includes ensuring that all necessary materials are available and in good condition for use during practices and competitions. The position demands strong communication skills, as the Assistant Athletic Trainer will interact regularly with student-athletes, coaches, and other athletic staff to promote a safe and healthy athletic environment. The role requires flexibility in working hours, as it may involve irregular and long hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. The Assistant Athletic Trainer must be prepared to adapt to the dynamic schedule of athletic events and training sessions, ensuring that student-athletes receive the care they need at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with student-athletes to prevent athletic injuries.
  • Recognize, evaluate, and provide immediate care for athletic injuries.
  • Rehabilitate and recondition injured athletes to facilitate their return to sports.
  • Maintain accurate records on the examination and physical condition of student-athletes.
  • Provide Athletic Trainer coverage at athletic activities and events.
  • Ensure appropriate maintenance of equipment and supplies assigned to the athletic training program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or a related field with relevant courses in anatomy, physical education, health, or related topics.
  • 1-3 years of experience in athletic training or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education.
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association and New Jersey State (Athletic Trainer License) prior to the first day of employment.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.
  • First Aid and CPR - professional rescuer certification prior to the first day of employment.
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with the university's Motor Vehicle Policy.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with health care administration in an athletic setting.
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation techniques for athletic injuries.
