About the position

The Assistant Attorney General in the Constitutional and Administrative Law Division plays a crucial role in representing state agencies and officials in various legal matters, including appeals and civil litigation in both state and federal courts. This position involves defending constitutional challenges to state statutes and regulations, as well as initiating litigation to support state programs. The role requires a strong commitment to public service and the ability to handle complex legal issues related to state governance.

Responsibilities

  • Represent state officials and agencies in appeals and litigation in state and federal courts regarding state policies, statutes, regulations, and administrative agency decisions.
  • Defend constitutional and legal challenges to state statutes and regulations.
  • Initiate litigation on behalf of state agencies to support their programs or assist their regulatory activities.
  • Handle a substantial trial-court caseload and manage approximately 80 appeals each year.

Requirements

  • Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar and the bar of the United States District Court for Massachusetts (or be eligible for admission to the federal bar upon hire).
  • At least three to five years of relevant legal experience is preferred.
  • Effective legal writing skills and the ability to independently handle litigation in trial and appellate courts.
  • Significant interest in public service and working in a collaborative public-law environment.
