About the position

The Office of the Attorney General has an opening for an Assistant Attorney General within the Criminal Division. The position will primarily be located in Augusta, but covers the entire state. This AAG position involves providing proactive direction/oversight to the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit (CCU), including affiliates, regarding Internet Crimes Against Children investigations and legal requirements of the unit pertaining to digital evidence. At the current time, the position also advises Maine State Police, other prosecutors, as well as county and municipal law enforcement agencies throughout the State that are engaged in the investigations that involve obtaining digital evidence from a device or an Electronic Communication Service Provider. This includes the need to provide legal advice on 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendment issues; review and/or draft affidavits in support of search warrants; issue subpoenas or other court processes to further criminal investigations; draft appellate briefs and conduct oral argument before the Law Court. In certain cases, the AAG may prosecute or assist in prosecution of CCU cases. The AAG also monitors legislation that involves the criminal process in obtaining digital information and teaches the current law throughout the state. In addition, the AAG may assist and prosecute any Criminal Division cases.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Criminal trial experience and trial skills.
  • Capable of assuming full responsibility for the prosecution of high-profile cases.
  • High ethical standards and sound judgment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work as a team with law enforcement and other prosecutors.
  • Must be a member of the Maine Bar in good standing.
