About the position

The Assistant Attorney General will work in the Employment, Tort, and Public Utilities Commission Division of the Attorney General's Office, responsible for defending the State and its agencies against tort and employment claims. The role involves managing assigned cases from initial motions through to trial and appeal, with opportunities for mentorship and training. The position allows for a hybrid work environment and requires periodic travel throughout Minnesota.

Responsibilities

• Handle assigned cases from initial Answer or Rule 12 motion through discovery, dispositive motion practice, mediation, trial, and appeal.
• Defend the State and its agencies, officers, and employees from tort and employment claims.
• Make strategic legal decisions as lead counsel on a diverse caseload.
• Interact successfully with clients and members of the public.
• Contribute positively to a team in an inclusive and collaborative work environment.

Requirements

• Graduation from a law school accredited by the ABA and licensed to practice in Minnesota or ability to obtain licensure within 90 days of hire.
• At least four years of civil litigation experience (clerking can qualify as two years of the four-year minimum).
• Interest in handling tort and employment cases before administrative tribunals, district courts, and appellate courts.
• Outstanding oral and written communication skills (writing sample required).
• Ability to travel to counties throughout the state.
• Ability to multitask and manage an active caseload under tight deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

• Judicial clerkship experience.
• Complex civil litigation experience, including use of document review tools such as Everlaw or Relativity.
