About the position
The Assistant Attorney General in the Government Bureau Trial Division will represent and defend the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, its agencies, and employees in various civil lawsuits. This role involves maintaining an active caseload and engaging in all aspects of civil litigation, including drafting pleadings, conducting discovery, and trying cases in superior and federal courts. The position is based in the Western MA Regional Office in Springfield and offers a hybrid work model with some remote workdays.
Responsibilities
- Represent and defend the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in civil lawsuits.
- Draft pleadings and conduct discovery for active cases.
- Take and defend depositions as part of litigation processes.
- Prepare and argue dispositive motions in court.
- Try cases in superior and federal courts.
Requirements
- At least five years' experience handling all aspects of civil litigation.
- Persuasive oral and written communication skills.
- Exposure to managing a large and varied caseload.
- Prior legal experience in tort, contracts, land use, eminent domain, civil rights, or employment litigation.
- Must be a member of the Massachusetts bar.
