About the position

The Assistant Beamline Scientist / Beamline Scientist position at Argonne National Laboratory involves supporting high-energy x-ray beamlines operated by the Structural Science group. The role focuses on conducting in situ and operando diffraction experiments, developing new techniques, and enhancing data acquisition strategies. The successful candidate will work within a diverse team to facilitate user experiments and contribute to advancements in physical, chemical, environmental, and materials sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Support user experiments on high-energy x-ray beamlines.
  • Develop new techniques and sample environments for beamlines.
  • Enhance data acquisition strategies for experiments.
  • Conduct in situ and operando diffraction experiments.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team to achieve research goals.

Requirements

  • PhD in physics, chemistry, computer science, materials science, or a related discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience with independent scientific work after PhD.
  • Experience in conducting in situ and operando diffraction experiments.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or C/C++.
  • Knowledge of diffraction theory and crystallography.
  • Skill in oral and written communication of scientific results.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Flexibility and fast adaptation to new situations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Instrumentation design and hands-on realization experience.
  • Development of scripts for advanced data acquisition and analysis.
  • Expertise in x-ray optics.
  • Experience with automation and robotics.
  • Knowledge in engineering materials science.
  • Knowledge in materials for energy storage and sustainability.
