About the position

The Assistant Chancellor and Chief of Staff at UC Merced plays a pivotal role in the Chancellor's Cabinet, providing strategic leadership and management across various campus operations. This position involves guiding the development of Cabinet agendas, formulating campus policy, and serving as a senior advisor to the Chancellor. The role requires a strong on-site presence to effectively manage crisis planning, workforce development, and governance structures critical to the institution's success. The Assistant Chancellor/Chief of Staff also represents the Chancellor to various constituents and is responsible for making decisions on sensitive organizational matters.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate and administer policies and programs for major functions affecting organization-wide performance and reputation.
  • Direct development of strategic goals and objectives for accountability and stewardship of university resources.
  • Provide direct strategic leadership, management, and guidance to various university units including Government Relations and Human Resources.
  • Provide general administrative oversight to units reporting directly to the Chancellor.
  • Interview, select, train, and evaluate staff performance; manage human resources in a high-performance environment.
  • Ensure teams provide optimal support for the Chancellor and associated events.
  • Conceptualize and implement initiatives to advance the Chancellor's vision and lead/manage special projects.
  • Monitor progress of Chancellor-inspired initiatives and respond to directives from the Office of the President.
  • Serve as advisor to the Chancellor on sensitive issues and facilitate resolution.
  • Provide oversight of the Chancellor's calendar and advise on meeting/event prioritization.
  • Communicate on the Chancellor's behalf with university constituents and draft sensitive correspondence.
  • Facilitate and participate in key constituent meetings and ensure follow-up actions.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for sensitive issues requiring immediate attention from the Chancellor.
  • Participate in the formulation of campus policy as a member of various councils and committees.
  • Guide the development of agendas for Chancellor's Cabinet and other key meetings.
  • Attend internal/external meetings for insights into administrative decision-making and relationship strengthening.
  • Prepare the Chancellor for meetings with the UC Council of Chancellors and UC Board of Regents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a related area.
  • 10 years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in an executive advisor capacity, preferably in higher education.

Benefits
