About the position

The Assistant Chemical Testing Engineer position at Caltrans involves working under the supervision of a Senior Chemical Testing Engineer to conduct routine qualitative and quantitative tests and chemical analyses on various materials including water, soil, metals, coatings, concrete, cement, and other miscellaneous materials. The role is crucial in ensuring the quality and safety of materials used in the construction and maintenance of transportation facilities. The incumbent will also perform physical testing on items such as pavement markers, delineators, channelizers, retroreflective sheeting, engineering fabrics, and traffic cones. In addition to testing, the Assistant Chemical Testing Engineer will assist in the laboratory and field evaluation of new product submittals, which is essential for maintaining high standards in material quality. The role also includes investigating complaints regarding defective materials, which may involve inspecting work related to the use of these materials. The incumbent is expected to handle all tasks necessary for the preparation and completion of tests and analyses, including preparing chemical reagents, cleaning and assembling laboratory apparatus, sample preparation, recording data, and preparing reports. Responsibilities

  • Perform routine qualitative and quantitative tests and chemical analyses on water, soil, metals, coatings, concrete, cement, and other materials.

  • Assist with laboratory and field evaluation of new product submittals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of chemical testing and analysis techniques.
  • Ability to work under supervision and follow established procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in testing and reporting.
  • Good communication skills for reporting findings and collaborating with team members.
