About the position

The Assistant Chief Information Officer (ACIO) for the School of Medicine (SOM) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) plays a pivotal role in overseeing and leading the development and administration of information technology (IT), digital transformation, and artificial intelligence (AI) programs and services. This position is crucial for ensuring that the IT strategies align with the organization's vision, mission, and objectives, particularly in supporting both centralized and satellite clinical and business operations. The ACIO will lead the planning and implementation of enterprise information systems that are essential for the effective functioning of the UTRGV SOM and UT Health RGV. In this role, the ACIO will provide leadership and direction on all information systems, including strategic planning, budgeting, and the coordination of IT matters. The individual will work collaboratively with senior management and key end users to identify and prioritize IT initiatives that meet the business needs of the organization. The ACIO will also be responsible for developing and maintaining an annual technology plan that supports the long-term goals of the UTRGV SOM and UT Health RGV, ensuring that all IT activities are aligned with the institution's objectives. The ACIO will oversee the daily operations of IT within the School of Medicine and UT Health RGV, ensuring that all systems operate according to internal standards and legal requirements. This includes leading the review of current IT systems and processes, developing new systems, and enhancing existing clinical and business operations. The ACIO will also chair various advisory committees and represent the IT portfolio's performance, including budget management and project timelines. The position requires a strong focus on customer service and operational efficiency, fostering a service-oriented environment that promotes growth and quality in IT functions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction on UTRGV SOM's and UT Health RGV information systems, including IT strategic planning and budgeting.
  • Aligns IT, digital technology, and AI objectives with the organization's vision and strategies.
  • Leads planning, development, evaluation, and coordination of technology systems for the School of Medicine.
  • Oversees IT policy recommendations for UTRGV SOM and UT Health RGV.
  • Ensures successful operation of daily IT activities within the School of Medicine and UT Health RGV enterprise.
  • Collaborates with senior management and key end users to identify and prioritize IT initiatives.
  • Develops, maintains, and administers an annual technology plan based on organizational needs.
  • Reports on the performance of the IT portfolio, including budgets and project durations.
  • Leads the development and management of integrated information services and reviews current IT systems.
  • Maintains a service-oriented, customer-focused operation that enhances IT functions.
  • Designs and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Develops and administers policies and standards to ensure data integrity and security.
  • Ensures compliance with internal standards and legal requirements for information systems.
  • Oversees cross-institutional initiatives and executive-level projects.
  • Chairs and participates in various advisory committees as needed.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related field from an accredited university.
  • Five years of progressive responsible experience in information technology, including operations, strategy, program management, and supervisory experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • IT leadership experience in large academic universities, public higher education, or academic medical centers.
