About the position

The Assistant Teacher plays a crucial role in supporting the teaching team at Westminster Preschool by implementing the curriculum and managing daily classroom operations in the absence of the Lead Teacher. This position focuses on fostering a safe and engaging learning environment for children, monitoring their progress, and maintaining necessary records. The Assistant Teacher is expected to uphold the school's educational philosophy and contribute positively to the overall mission and goals of the program.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Lead Teacher in implementing the curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Manage day-to-day operational activities of the classroom in the absence of the Lead Teacher.
  • Monitor children's progress and maintain related records as directed by the Lead Teacher.
  • Build strong relationships with children and families.
  • Maintain adult supervision of children and adhere to child/staff ratios.
  • Attend all required training and events.
  • Maintain a clean and organized classroom environment.
  • Assist in keeping learning centers neat and organized.
  • Follow a daily schedule with appropriate transition times between activities.
  • Interact with children during all activities and encourage positive conversations during mealtimes.
  • Implement activities as assigned by the Lead Teacher.
  • Complete and submit the daily cleaning checklist in the absence of the Lead Teacher.
  • Communicate with children at eye-level and use a problem-solving approach for conflicts.
  • Regularly communicate with families about their child's daily activities and concerns.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalency.
  • Interest in or working towards a CDA awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition or equivalent.
  • Ability to learn and utilize specialized software for parent and staff communication.
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • CPR/First Aid/Universal Precautions certification with annual recertification.
  • Pass drug screening, criminal background check, and FSSA background check.
  • TB testing and up-to-date physical examination.
  • Complete trainings in Safe Sleep, Indiana Early Learning Foundations, Child Abuse and Neglect, and Child Safety modules.
  • Maintain 20 hours annually of in-service training on early childhood topics.
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory staff meetings/trainings.
