About the position

The Assistant Coach for Field Hockey at Dartmouth College plays a vital role in the coaching staff, working under the head coach to plan, coach, recruit, and promote the field hockey program. This position is essential for achieving the program's goals by providing strategic recommendations, coaching instruction, and evaluating prospective recruits. The role requires a detail-oriented, trustworthy, and collaborative individual who is passionate about field hockey and committed to the team's success.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to planning and implementing conditioning, training, and coaching programs for the field hockey team.
  • Assists head coach in conducting team practices, training, conditioning, and competitions.
  • Prepares scouting reports and game plans for opponents.
  • Makes recommendations to the head coach regarding adjustments to game plans and line-ups during competitions.
  • Teaches field hockey skills to student-athletes during practices, games, and individual training sessions.
  • Evaluates performance of athletes and offers technical, strategic, and mental instruction and advice.
  • Demonstrates a sincere interest in the academic, personal, and physical welfare of each student-athlete, counseling team members as necessary.
  • Independently seeks and develops new training concepts and sport-specific knowledge to enhance the coaching staff's overall knowledge.
  • Assists head coach in developing and implementing an overall recruiting plan, including identifying qualified students and talented athletes.
  • Maintains appropriate recruiting records as required by the Ivy League and NCAA.
  • Knows and complies with the rules and regulations of the Ivy League and NCAA, ensuring compliance among athletes and representatives.
  • Provides input in planning and administering the budget for the field hockey program, including assessing needs for equipment and travel.
  • Assists head coach in planning and developing a competitive schedule and coordinating team travel plans.
  • Promotes Dartmouth and the field hockey program through camps, clinics, and community involvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3-5 years experience playing and/or coaching field hockey at the high school or collegiate level.
  • Strong knowledge of field hockey skills and strategies.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a diverse community.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to recruit effectively with no athletic grants and highly selective admissions standards.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a coaching role at the collegiate level.
  • Familiarity with NCAA regulations and compliance.
