About the position
The Assistant Commissioner of Systems Engineering and Traffic Management will be a key member of the senior management team within the Traffic Operations Division, responsible for overseeing the deployment and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in New York City. This role involves managing a professional staff and ensuring the effective operation of traffic management programs, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and equity in transportation services.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the deployment and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to support safe and efficient roadway operations.
- Administer the System Engineering unit and manage the central control system of over 13,800 signalized intersections.
- Implement key Agency initiatives, including the Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic deaths.
- Research, test, and recommend new technologies for deployment in New York City.
- Manage capital construction projects for ITS deployment, including data analysis, integration, design, and security.
- Represent the Department at meetings with various City Agencies and outside stakeholders.
- Identify and develop short, medium, and long-range strategies for safety-focused culture and cost-effective operations.
Requirements
- A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer.
- Six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in engineering or plan examining work.
- At least two (2) years of experience in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity.
Nice-to-haves
- Familiarity with current and emerging standard methodologies on the design, delivery, and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems.
- Experience in managing large engineering and operations staff.
