About the position

The Assistant Commissioner of Systems Engineering and Traffic Management will be a key member of the senior management team within the Traffic Operations Division. This role involves overseeing a professional staff and managing the deployment and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to enhance the safety and efficiency of New York City's roadways. The Assistant Commissioner will also be responsible for implementing key agency initiatives, including the Vision Zero goal aimed at eliminating traffic deaths, and managing various capital projects related to ITS deployment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the professional staff of engineers and operations and administration staff.
• Manage the deployment and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
• Implement key Agency initiatives, including the Vision Zero goal.
• Administer the System Engineering unit and manage the central control system of over 13,800+ signalized intersections.
• Research, test, and recommend new technologies for deployment in New York City.
• Represent the Department at meetings with various City Agencies and outside stakeholders.
• Manage capital construction projects for ITS deployment, ITS data analysis, integration, design, and security.
• Ensure a safety-focused culture and cost-effective operations.
• Coordinate closely with federal and state agencies regarding ITS projects.

Requirements

• A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer.
• Six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in engineering or plan examining work.
• At least two (2) years of experience in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity.
