About the position

The Assistant Controller - Materials Division is a senior role within the Accounting and Finance Team, responsible for overseeing various accounting operations including Accounts Payable, Billing, Cost Accounting, and General Accounting. This position requires a candidate with significant operational experience and a passion for excellence, who can lead and develop a diverse team while ensuring compliance with GAAP and audit standards. The role involves preparing financial statements, coordinating audits, and interacting with management to meet their financial needs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate Accounts Payable, Billing, Cost Accounting, and General Accounting operations for the division.
  • Plan, direct and coordinate operational accounting and finance functions for the division.
  • Oversee all daily activities to ensure timely and accurate performance; recommend and implement best practices to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Develop and implement accounting procedures to comply with GAAP and audit standards.
  • Supervise divisional general ledger entries and account reconciliations to ensure timely and accurate closing cycles.
  • Prepare standalone financial statements in conformance with US GAAP.
  • Coordinate external audit activities.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls and operating procedures; recommend changes as required to ensure the integrity of financial reporting systems.
  • Lead and develop direct and indirect reports, providing continual performance feedback.
  • Hire, train and retain skilled accounting staff.
  • Be an integral member of the General Accounting Team, share your ideas and thoughts, and help to drive a culture of proactive problem solving and self-directed continuous improvement.
  • Interact with Vice President of Construction and other managers to assure their needs are being met.

Requirements

  • BS in Accounting required, MBA/MSA preferred.
  • CPA, CMA, CFM or similar designation strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of professional experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership position working for a large middle-market company with multiple divisions.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial close and financial statement preparation.
  • Solid experience with cost accounting in a manufacturing and/or construction environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of accounting professionals (preference for a team of 3 or more).
  • High level of integrity, and the ability to project an image of trust and reliability.
  • Proactive nature, with a sense of urgency to handle a variety of tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.
  • Technical/analytical focus to be able to identify trends, discover causes of variances, and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Advanced skills with standard office software (MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook).
