The Assistant Controller plays a crucial role in overseeing payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and account reconciliations while supporting financial audits. This position involves preparing for audits, addressing accounting discrepancies, and ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) while preparing relevant financial reports. The Assistant Controller will assist the Controller by reviewing and analyzing account records, requiring a self-starter who is flexible, possesses high integrity, is action and goal-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented, and collaborative environment. This role is salaried and exempt, and it encompasses essential duties such as preparing and consolidating financial statements, assisting with budget development and evaluation, supporting the implementation of internal control systems, overseeing accounts payable and receivable, and providing leadership and training to accounting staff. The Assistant Controller will also ensure strict compliance with company and regulatory requirements and manage accounts using various software programs.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and consolidate financial statements, reports, and BPP local and state tax filings.
  • Assist with the development and evaluation of budgets, including preparing budget reports.
  • Support the formulation and implementation of internal control systems.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll, identifying discrepancies, and reconciling accounts.
  • Assist the accounting department with all aspects of the general ledger.
  • Ensure strict compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and manage accounts using various software programs.
  • Provide leadership, training, and development to accounts receivable, accounts payable, and accounting staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
  • 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience; previous experience as an accountant, assistant controller, or in a similar role required.
  • Proven experience in leading a team within a finance or accounting department.
  • Ability to mentor, train, and direct staff.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Excel and Google Suite; working knowledge of NetSuite or similar ERP system.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to resolve accounting discrepancies and issues.
  • Ability to analyze financial data, identify trends, and provide actionable insights.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, in English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GAAP accounting principles.
