About the position

The Assistant Controller at Machinery Partner is a pivotal role within the finance team, focusing on financial operations for a rapidly growing marketplace and hardware business. This position is responsible for overseeing accounting processes, ensuring compliance with GAAP, and implementing scalable financial controls to support the company's hyper-growth. The role requires a detail-oriented and strategic thinker who can manage complex financial challenges and contribute to cross-functional projects.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee accounting processes related to marketplace transactions, including receivables, payables, and hardware inventory.
  • Implement systems to track and reconcile marketplace revenue, costs, and transaction flow.
  • Lead the month-end close process to ensure the integrity of accounting information.
  • Record, verify, and consolidate financial transactions in the general ledger, ensuring compliance with GAAP.
  • Design and implement financial controls and processes tailored to the needs of a hardware-driven marketplace.
  • Prepare financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) and deliver insights on KPIs and operational trends.
  • Analyze financial results, identify opportunities for improvement, and support strategic decision-making.
  • Work across teams to support initiatives like ERP implementations, tax compliance, and process optimization.
  • Manage or contribute to special projects aligned with the company's growth and operational goals.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in finance or accounting, with a background in marketplaces or hardware-focused businesses.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP principles and financial reporting.
  • Proficient in ERP systems, QuickBooks, and other financial tools.
  • Sharp analytical skills and the ability to manage large datasets while staying detail-oriented.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPA, CFA, or equivalent certification.
  • Hands-on experience in a hardware or marketplace startup, particularly during early growth stages.
  • Familiarity with multi-state sales tax for hardware transactions.
