About the position

The Assistant Controller is responsible for overseeing the accounting functions related to the KIPP Texas Future Fund endowment, planned giving, and restricted accounts. This role involves financial modeling, compliance review, quarterly financial reporting, and addressing inquiries from account managers. The Assistant Controller will also evaluate and execute accounting for restricted gifts, pledges, and grants in accordance with GAAP, GAAS, and UPMIFA, ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance with donor restrictions.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for investment accounting focusing on improving investment transaction processing and internal controls.
  • Prepare monthly consolidated investment activity and endowment spreadsheets detailing gift activity, income distribution, and investment activity.
  • Prepare related journal entries to record activity in the general ledger.
  • Prepare market value reporting on a monthly basis and reconcile quarterly to the investment advisor reporting.
  • Maintain contact with investment managers and advisors to gather monthly information.
  • Collaborate with the CFO to prepare for Board of Director Meetings and draft Investment Committee minutes.
  • Review gift agreements and planned giving instruments to determine appropriate classification and set up new restricted fund accounts.
  • Document due diligence performed on the endowment's investments by the investment advisor and Finance staff.
  • Prepare year-end workpapers for contributions and investments, managing the confirmation process with auditors.
  • Compute and summarize investment fee expenses for auditors and reporting to the investment committee.
  • Prepare quarterly reporting for endowment transfers to/from operations with endowment cash summary reporting.
  • Prepare monthly gift workpapers and reconcile to Advancement reporting.
  • Prepare pledge journal entries on a quarterly basis to record activity in the general ledger.
  • Prepare necessary endowment and restricted gift reports for Advancement stewardship needs.
  • Support post-award grant activities and prepare quarterly grant accrual entries, invoices, and drawdown requests.
  • Assist in quarterly and year-end closings and the financial statement audit.
  • Prepare restricted fund reporting for key stakeholders and conduct quarterly fund use reviews.

Requirements

  • 5 years of accounting experience (preferred)
  • Experience with QuickBooks

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in financial modeling
  • Knowledge of GAAP, GAAS, and UPMIFA
