About the position

The Assistant Controller at MPHI is responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial and accounting operations of the organization. This role ensures the integrity of financial information, compliance with accounting principles, and serves as a backup to the Controller. Key responsibilities include managing accounting functions, overseeing capital asset tracking, implementing new GASB standards, and providing training on compliance issues.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the day-to-day accounting functions of the Institute, including travel, accounts payable, and maintaining the integrity of the general ledger.
  • Approve purchase orders for all Subcontractor arrangements and serve as backup to the Program Directors for approval of program purchase orders.
  • Responsible for capital asset tracking, monitoring, and preparation of quarterly entries and other adjustments as needed.
  • Manage accounting related to GASB 87 - Leases, GASB 96 - Subscription Based Information Technology Arrangements, and GASB 101 - Compensated Absences.
  • Research and implement new GASB standards applicable to the Institute.
  • Hire, supervise, direct, and train the Travel & Expense Reimbursement Specialist staff.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of the Institute's accounting systems and processes, especially for monthly review and reconciliation of credit cards.
  • Develop and implement accounting and compliance policies and procedures.
  • Research accounting issues to improve administrative functioning and ensure reporting in accordance with GAAP.
  • Act as a liaison on financial related issues, troubleshooting complex financial issues, and relaying sensitive information as appropriate.
  • Provide education & training to programs on compliance issues and financial management.
  • Research, prepare, and analyze financial data and reports for management.
  • Inform/update Controller and perform tasks as necessary in Controller's absence.
  • Track and report federal expenditures for preparation of the SEFA for the annual audit in coordination with the Finance & Budget Manager.
  • Assist with year-end close, including preparation of information required by auditors for the financial statement audit and ensure compliance with Uniform Guidance.
  • Assist Controller with tax filings, including annual Form 990 and other non-tax filings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required.
  • Certified Public Accounting certification preferred.
  • Three to seven years of increasingly complex experience in accounting.
  • Non-profit leadership experience with an organization funded by grants and contracts highly desirable.
  • Supervisory experience and experience with computerized accounting systems required.

  • Strong financial and analytical skills.
  • Ability to follow complex written regulatory & legal language and work independently in a complex environment.
