About the position

UHY LLP is seeking an Assistant Controller to join their team in Holly, MI. This position is ideal for candidates with plant accounting experience, particularly in the manufacturing sector, preferably automotive. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for directing and coordinating all activities related to financial reporting, ensuring the proper recording and safeguarding of company assets in compliance with audit requirements. This role requires advanced Excel skills and solid analytical abilities, as well as the capacity to travel to California for planned trips 2 to 4 times per year. The position is primarily onsite, with some flexibility for hybrid work (1 day work from home) after an initial training period of 3 to 4 months. The Assistant Controller will oversee intercompany activities and assist with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance efforts, which include training process owners, providing documentation assistance, performing reviews, and completing annual testing and walkthroughs. The role also involves analyzing the monthly balance sheet, reconciling accounts, and ensuring adherence to accounting department processes and procedures. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for the accurate and timely completion of month-end, quarterly, and annual close processes, as well as preparing financial records for operations and management reporting. The position requires fostering a collaborative work environment within the Finance department and across other departments, along with any additional responsibilities assigned by management.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with directing and coordinating all activities of employees involved with financial reporting to ensure proper recording and safeguarding of company assets in accordance with audit requirements.
  • Oversee intercompany activities within the company and partners.
  • Assist with Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) compliance efforts, including training process owners, providing assistance with documentation, performing reviews, and completing annual testing and walkthroughs.
  • Analyze monthly balance sheet and reconcile and review for minimum control requirements.
  • Ensure development, continual improvement, and adherence to all accounting department processes and procedures, including both accounting systems and individual position procedures.
  • Oversee and provide accurate and timely period month-end, quarterly, and annual close and subsequent reporting requirements.
  • Prepare required management information and financial records for operations, both to division GM, AGM, and corporate office.
  • Facilitate an appropriate work environment within the Finance department and between the department and other work groups.
  • Perform any additional responsibilities deemed necessary by management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, finance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a financial function, preferably in the automotive industry.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Proficient advanced computer skills, including knowledge in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Proficient in advanced computer-based application software, with experience in manufacturing software/databases (BAAN & HFM a plus).
  • Must be able to travel to California for planned trips 2 to 4+ times per year.
