About the position

The Assistant Custodian Engineer position at Thurgood Marshall Middle School within the Rochester City School District is a full-time role responsible for supporting the Custodian Engineer in maintaining the physical condition of the school. This position involves a variety of tasks including general housekeeping, maintenance, and semi-skilled repair work. The Assistant Custodian Engineer will assist in the operation and maintenance of steam boilers, perform mechanical and electrical maintenance, and ensure the cleanliness and safety of the school environment. The role requires a hands-on approach to various maintenance tasks, including plumbing, minor carpentry, and the upkeep of floors and carpets throughout the school. The Assistant Custodian Engineer will also be responsible for recordkeeping related to maintenance activities and will monitor the operation of swimming pool pumps and filters, ensuring proper chemical treatment of the water. In this role, the Assistant Custodian Engineer will work under the general supervision of a Custodian Engineer or other higher-level staff members. While the position does not include supervisory responsibilities, the Assistant Custodian Engineer may assume the Custodian Engineer's duties in their absence. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate good knowledge of building maintenance methods and materials, as well as the ability to follow both oral and written instructions effectively. The position is essential in maintaining a safe and clean environment for students and staff, contributing to the overall mission of the Rochester City School District to provide equitable access to high-quality education.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Custodian Engineer with general housekeeping and maintenance tasks.
  • Perform mechanical and electrical maintenance, including steam boiler maintenance.
  • Read meters and gauges to determine the operating condition of equipment.
  • Disassemble boilers for cleaning and repair of internal parts.
  • Operate air conditioning units and perform minor repairs as needed.
  • Maintain floors and carpets in various areas of the school.
  • Assist in keeping records of boiler checks, purchase orders, and payroll information.
  • Collect and dispose of refuse and maintain cleanliness in the school.
  • Wash, paint, and varnish furniture and equipment as required.
  • Perform basic grounds maintenance tasks using hand or power equipment.
  • Secure the building by closing and locking windows and doors at the end of the day.
  • Monitor the operation of swimming pool pumps and filters.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year of paid full-time or part-time equivalent experience in building housekeeping and maintenance work involving the operation of a stationary steam plant, or possession of a Chief, First, Second, or Third Class Stationary Engineer's License issued by a Board of Stationary Engineers in New York.
  • Possession of a Third Class Stationary Engineer's license at the time of appointment.
