About the position

The Assistant Custodian Engineer at Thurgood Marshall Middle School is responsible for supporting the Custodian Engineer in maintaining the physical condition of the school. This role involves general housekeeping, maintenance tasks, and semi-skilled repair work, ensuring a clean and safe environment for students and staff. The position requires hands-on work and may involve supervising custodial assistants in the absence of the Custodian Engineer.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Custodian Engineer with general housekeeping and maintenance tasks.
• Perform mechanical and electrical maintenance, including steam boiler maintenance.
• Read meters and gauges to determine the operating condition of equipment.
• Disassemble boilers for cleaning and repair of internal parts.
• Operate and perform minor repairs on air conditioning units and related equipment.
• Maintain floors and carpets in various areas of the school.
• Keep records of boiler checks, purchase orders, and payroll information.
• Collect and dispose of refuse.
• Wash, paint, and varnish furniture and equipment.
• Perform basic grounds maintenance tasks with hand or power equipment.
• Secure buildings by closing and locking windows.
• Monitor swimming pool pumps and filters, treating the water with chemicals.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalency diploma.
• One year of paid full-time or part-time equivalent experience in building housekeeping and maintenance work involving stationary steam plant operation, or possession of a relevant engineer's license.

Nice-to-haves

• Possession of a Chief, First, Second, or Third Class Stationary Engineer's License issued by a Board of Stationary Engineers in New York.
