About the position

The Assistant Day Camp Director at YMCA Camp Westwood plays a crucial role in facilitating daily camp operations under the supervision of the Director of Camping Services. This management position is responsible for training, supervising, and supporting camp staff to ensure that campers have a memorable and impactful experience. The role emphasizes creating a fun and safe environment while developing essential skills in communication, teamwork, and leadership. The camp is undergoing significant growth, including the implementation of an outdoor center program and the introduction of an overnight summer camp, making this an exciting opportunity for driven individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate daily camp operations to ensure a memorable experience for campers.
  • Train, supervise, and support camp staff.
  • Oversee daily activities and general camp operations in collaboration with the Director of Camping Services.
  • Guide and direct campers and staff in various camp activities, ensuring character and skill development.
  • Ensure camp programs are delivered safely and efficiently to all guests.
  • Create and implement extended season programs to generate new revenue streams.
  • Coordinate weekly schedules, staff assignments, and logistics for day camp and other organizations.
  • Promote camp programs through media and community outreach.
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising staff.
  • Maintain correspondence with parents of campers and ensure their goals are met.

Requirements

  • Passion and commitment to the mission of the YMCA.
  • Superior supervisory skills and the ability to inspire and motivate staff and volunteers.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to relate effectively to diverse groups.
  • Professional image with conflict resolution skills and sound judgment.
  • Highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks.
  • Minimum first aid, CPR, and AED certification required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs.
  • Must be 25+ with a valid driver's license and a clean driving history.
  • 2-3 summers of camp leadership experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in outdoor recreational programs required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in outdoor recreational programs.
  • Familiarity with camp programs such as aquatics, high ropes, and arts and crafts.
