About the position

The Assistant Dean of Research & Chief of Staff at UC Irvine's School of Medicine is responsible for overseeing the clinical and basic science research enterprise. This role involves strategic planning, management of research operations, and serving as a subject matter expert on research contracts and grants. The Assistant Dean will represent the Dean to various stakeholders and will be involved in budgeting, staffing, finance, and policy development to achieve research distinction.

Responsibilities

  • Organizational oversight of the School of Medicine's clinical and basic science research enterprise.
  • Plan, design, and implement the overall strategic direction of research within the School of Medicine.
  • Exercise independent judgment and decision-making in managing the school's research operations.
  • Oversee operational management including budgeting, staffing, finance, human resources, and space planning.
  • Represent the Dean to the University community and various stakeholders.
  • Direct short- and long-term planning and develop policies and procedures within the School of Medicine.

Requirements

  • Academic background and recognized expertise in multiple disciplines of research.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
  • Expert oral and written communication skills with a broad community of researchers and scientists, industrial partners, program managers, funding agencies, media, and center managers.
  • Management experience in academic, research, and/or government agencies.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative programs or research agenda.
  • Demonstrated cutting-edge research capabilities.
  • Skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards.
  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals which measure effectiveness of contributions to efficient operations of department.
  • Strong knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Advanced project management skills, including the capability to manage capital projects.
  • Uses expert level negotiation skills to work collaboratively with internal and external, diverse constituencies.
  • Advanced skills in strategy development, systems planning and change management.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in an academic research environment.
